And we're not talking about Christmas, either. Every year, spring reminds us of the continual circle of life. The snow begins to melt. Sleeping, baren trees awaken and begin to bud and leaf. New life can be found all around outside from fawns, to calves, and my personal favorite- foals.
Every May the excitement mounts as we wait and see what the new crop of foals will look like. Old Foundation Quarter Horses takes care to assess the previous years foals to determine if we want to breed full siblings, or try a new mare/stallion pairing. This year was extra special as we introduced a new stallion into the mix, bringing us up to four stallions within our breeding program. The offspring of the new stud are all 97% Foundation bred and we cannot wait to see how the grow over the summer.
In total our foal crop for the season was 17, which is our largest to date. The foals will spend the summer and fall with their mares, grazing out in the pastures. Once weaned they'll spend their time in a second herd, continuing to grow and mature until about 2 years of age when they come in to be halter trained.
